AR.IO Network Gateway Portal
Node software UI for staking and decentralized gateway operations.
Overview
Arweave is a global, permissionless hard drive that stores data permanently and incentivizes nodes to keep it - opening up a massive design space for builders to create awesome new projects. But the problem was that Arweave was basically constrained by a single, centralized point of failure: one gateway.
In this context, gateways can be thought of as the performant access points to Arweave, enabling seamless data "in" and "out" of the permaweb. "In" refers to bundling, indexing, and seeding new data; while "Out" means fast retrieval, caching, and querying.
AR.IO came along with a solution for an incentivized and decentralized gateway protocol letting platforms, projects, and end-users have theoretically thousands - or more - alternative gateways to access and query indexed data. In other words, a scalable and modular gateway built for the permaweb, atop the Arweave permanent data storage network.
We designed these gateways for flexibility, serving operators, users, and developers by allowing interchangeable core components. This modular approach supports various operations and can be tailored to different scales and needs. It's a practical solution that helps developers customize applications, making the platform adaptable and straightforward to use.
The first few nodes were OG community members and builders who were able to run them from home on a laptop, or even off of raspberry pies. This put gateway operators in control of writing, serving, and indexing the permanent data that's most important to them. They could uniquely configure their gateway for specific apps, use cases, or business models; and become a self-sovereign operator within the decentralized AR.IO Network.
But to scale adoption and let communities run enterprise-grade systems in the cloud, we wanted to develop a UI for the node software, whereby users could stake to operate a node and run a gateway to serve their communities, and get rewarded in the process.
Data Writing and Proxying
AR.IO gateways excel in writing permanent data by efficiently proxying base layer transaction headers and data chunks to the Arweave network, ensuring efficient inclusion in mempools for optimal storage and replication.
Data Retrieval
Gateways offer advanced data retrieval capabilities, including accessing transaction headers, individual data chunks, and blocks from the blockweave. They also provide information on storage pricing rates and wallet balances, ensuring comprehensive access to all necessary data components.
Serving Full DApps with Arweave Manifests
AR.IO gateways harness the power of Arweave Manifests to revolutionize the deployment of decentralized applications (DApps) on the permanent web. These special manifest files enable the logical grouping of content, such as the various files and assets comprising a web page or application, into a single, easily accessible manifest file. Gateways can serve entire websites or apps directly from these manifests, streamlining permaweb access by allowing users to reference transactions through file names or paths.
Permaweb Domain Name Resolution
AR.IO gateways play a crucial role in the Arweave Name System (ArNS) by acting as name resolvers, connecting user-friendly domain names to specific permaweb data, dApps, and web pages. They facilitate easy access to decentralized content by resolving ArNS registered names into gateway subdomains, making navigation intuitive and further simplifying the user experience on the permaweb.
Open Source and Developer-Centric Features
AR.IO gateways are designed with developers in mind, featuring flexible interfaces to subsystems and databases, which support a range of technologies suitable for various operational scales. It's open source, so anyone can verify and extend its capabilities. This developer-friendly environment empowers innovation and customization, making it easier to build and deploy tailored applications.
